A new beginning after twenty years on the streets

After twenty years of homelessness, Patrick van der Jagt found his way back into society. For years, he lived on the streets of Rotterdam, where his days consisted of scraping together money and looking for a place to sleep. His life was dominated by addictions to cocaine and heroin and work in prostitution. Everything changed in 2018, during Het Rotterdam Project, in a gripping episode in which...

"No matter how deep the hole you've dug for yourself, how hopeless life may seem, or how few teeth you have left in your mouth, everyone can learn to love themselves again."

A new beginning after twenty years on the streets. Patrick van der Jagt gave up his addictions — live on national television — and since then, his life has taken a completely new turn. He found love, became a father, and grew into a successful photographer and motivational speaker. His story is one of self-love, resilience, and the harsh reality of life on the streets. "No matter how deep the hole you dug yourself, how hopeless life seems, or how many teeth you still have — everyone can learn to love themselves again." — Patrick van der Jagt

Control and Balance Patrick knows better than anyone how important it is to take control of your mental health. For him, it is about honesty, connection, and making choices that are good for both body and mind. “To me, mental health means not wanting to be determined by external factors. I want to be independent, chart my own course, and make decisions that feel right for me.”

Daily habits for mental resilience For Patrick, a healthy lifestyle forms the foundation of mental well-being. “Good sleep, good food, and plenty of exercise,” he says about the pillars of his routine. “I also spend time with friends and acquaintances without alcohol or drugs. Sober moments of connection are essential to keeping my head clear.” It is precisely these small but powerful habits that keep him in balance.

Honesty and Connection Honesty is crucial for Patrick in reducing stress. “The most important thing is complete honesty — talking without shame,” he says. “I have a close group of people around me who understand me and with whom I can be completely myself.” That sense of understanding and connection makes all the difference. “It is a relief when you no longer have to hide anything.”

Creativity as an Outlet For Patrick, music and art are more than passions — they are an outlet for his emotions. “I have always loved singing and listening to music; it helped me process my feelings.” Art also plays an important role in his life. “It brings me peace. Creativity is my way of expressing emotions.” A lyric that touches him deeply comes from Lady Wray: 'I'll let you take a piece of me, I hope you find the peace you need.' For Patrick, these words symbolize the power of letting go and inner peace — something that has helped him better understand his own emotions.

A message of hope. Patrick's message to everyone struggling is simple yet powerful: “It is never too late to reinvent yourself. Shame and fear are vastly overrated. You don’t have to hide. Allow yourself growth and change.” Despite everything he has been through, he unconditionally believes that everyone has the chance to give their life a new direction.
