The MIND YOUR MIND Edition is a traveling exhibition that uses art and storytelling to make mental health a topic of discussion for young people. Together with partners such as the Municipality of Rotterdam and A State of Trance (ASOT), we create portraits of well-known DJs, such as Armin van Buuren, Ruben de Ronde, and Ferry Corsten, who share their personal stories about mental health. Each portrait contains a QR code that leads young people to audio stories and practical resources. Thanks to this unique combination of art, music, and technology, we reach young people at festivals, in clubs, and via social media—places where they feel connected.

Why the dance industry?

The dance industry attracts millions of young people worldwide and offers a unique entry point to discuss mental health in a relatable and accessible way. This also applies to boys, a target group that is often difficult to reach when it comes to mental health. By having DJs and artists candidly share their own struggles, we create recognition and encourage young people to talk about their mental well-being themselves.

We are launching the entire collection during ADE 2025.

Resilient stories

Through personal and resilient stories from both well-known and unknown Dutch people, we open eyes to mental poverty and make it a topic of discussion in schools, events, festivals, and within organizations. We do this by means of traveling exhibitions featuring powerful artworks. Via a QR code at each portrait, you can listen to the personal audio documentary or read the story in the story collection.

Errand

The stories have diverse perspectives, different problems, impact on various areas of life, and diverse solutions and backgrounds. Each story has “a message” for society and the individual: how they uniquely shape their lives despite a traumatic event. In addition to sharing ideals and ambitions through the stories, we also inspire with a number of recipes for a “mentally healthy” life.

Reach

In 3 years, with the help of at least 50 partners, we will inspire 1 million people to lead a mentally healthier and more positive life. The Mental Health Art Tour will travel to at least 100 organizations,

schools and public spaces.

Over de Mental Health Art Tour

The Mental Health Art Tour is an art project about mental health — open, personal, and without big words. Through portraits and audio stories, well-known and unknown people share their stories: about what has shaped them, what has touched them, and how they cope with the ups and downs of life.

Speaking Portraits

Behind every portrait lies a voice. Sometimes recognizable, sometimes surprising, but always human. By looking and listening, space is created for reflection and conversation — with yourself and with each other. The works travel to schools, events, festivals, and organizations. Not to explain or solve anything, but to be present. To show that mental health is something that touches us all. You don't have to do anything, think anything, or understand anything. Just look. To listen. And take away what stays with you.

MOHAMEDOU OULD SLAHI

When you go to bed, forgive the people who have hurt you. Do not let the trauma stay with you any longer.

A quote from the audio of Mohamedou. He was wrongly imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay for 15 years.

MOHAMEDOU was born in Mauritania. After high school, he received a scholarship to study, left for Germany at the age of eighteen, and became a technical engineer. In 2001, following 9/11, he was arrested and eventually transferred to Guantanamo Bay without charge. Mohamedou sees it as his mission to be the face and voice of injustice and to stand up for those who cannot defend themselves. His story has been published in 25 languages as the book "Guantanamo Diary" and adapted into the Netflix film "The Mauritanian".

ABOUT US

The Mental Health Art Tour is committed to combating mental poverty. On the one hand, we want to break the taboo surrounding mental health by making it open for discussion and thereby creating more understanding – for yourself and for each other. On the other hand, poverty and mental health issues often reinforce each other, which is why we want to stand up for people living in poverty and offer them the support they need. There are many people who have ended up in a stressful situation in one way or another. This can range from "not feeling comfortable in your own skin" to burnout, bore-out, divorce, anxiety, loneliness, trauma, grief processing, and relationship problems. Over 40 percent of the Dutch population has experienced mental health issues at some point.

FOR ORGANIZATIONS

FEEL WELL, DO WELL.

"Totemly Me" advocates for (or actually against) mental poverty. We define the concept of “mental poverty” in two ways. On the one hand, we want to break the taboo surrounding mental health among employees of organizations by making it open for discussion, so that understanding is created for oneself and for one another. On the other hand, poverty and mental health problems literally reinforce each other. That is why we want to stand up for people living in poverty.

Feel Well

Under the motto 'paying attention to your mental health should become just as normal as brushing your teeth every day,' we encourage investing in me-time. To stay physically healthy, exercise is a regular part of many people's lives. For our mental health, we will also need to incorporate a daily routine. With a good lifestyle—in addition to preventing various diseases—significant health benefits can be achieved. Awareness and the transformation from illness and care to health and behavior are needed more than ever.

Do Well

The proceeds from this project will be used to add a limited edition of portraits of influencers to this exhibition. The aim is to tour schools to reach young people, who share their life lessons and struggles regarding mental health.

In addition, we go a step further and offer a free, validated training program to fund the costs of people who need mental support. In this way, HUSH HOUR helps these people become more resilient. Entrenched patterns are broken and transformed into healthy and effective routines.

What is going on inside your Geesje

Artwork by Kim Clerx

Geesje was homeless for more than 25 years and a familiar sight on Wilhelminaplein in Eindhoven, always friendly and smiling, despite her difficult past. Her life started hard, in which she never truly felt at home. At 18, she ended up on the streets and has traveled through countless cities since then.

Geesje recently passed away, and artist Kim Clerx created this artwork to continue Geesje's dream: that people look beyond their prejudices and see homeless people as individuals with stories and feelings, just like everyone else. Everyone has a story, and something goes on inside our little Geest...

YOUNG PEOPLE

xArtboard 1

We are concerned about the mental health of young people. One in five young people suffers from a psychological problem. Depression and anxiety, in particular, are common. We hope that through the Mental Health Art Tour, young people will start talking about their mental health and that it will become just as normal to visit the GP for a psychological complaint as for a broken leg.

During this experience, young people are also given the opportunity to open up in a safe environment, and through creating art combined with a virtual and interactive experience, they acquire new skills that help them face life with resilience. We do not do this alone, but together with partners. One of them in particular: Taboeiend

Mindfulness kunstbox

This box contains 10 mindfulness art audio postcards, the proceeds of which are used to make the Mental Health Art Tour for young people possible. The set also includes a special art card featuring a beautiful poem by Merel Moore. The mindfulness art experiences challenge you to look at yourself and others in a new way – an invitation to open your heart.

An art walk has also been developed that you can follow with your smartphone or tablet. This route leads you past the same works, where each artwork is recognizable by route signs with QR codes. These portraits are linked to personal stories via QR codes, providing the viewer with a profound experience. The poignant images allow young people to discover how resilience and self-reflection can lead to genuine connection. In addition to these impactful visual narratives, the exhibition offers a podcast in which the subjects candidly share their personal struggles. These are not superficial interviews, but in-depth conversations that show that they too – just like you – face challenges.

Mind your Mind

MIND your MIND was founded on the idea that it is important to pay just as much attention to your mental health as to your physical health. To stay physically healthy, exercise is a regular part of many people's lives. To promote mental health, we must also incorporate a daily routine. Taking good care of yourself is important.

With the MIND your MIND campaign, the Mental Health Art Tour aims to create a positive, open, and safe association with the theme of “mental balance,” conveying that investing in health has a long-term effect.

Becoming and staying mentally healthy is a conversation we must be able to have with each other in all openness. Without the fear of prejudice from others. Without the fear of stigma and labels. Mental health concerns us all. You had better join the conversation.

Irene Hoff – a Dutch artist based in Bali – created a first series of portraits for the Mental Health Art Tour of Isa Hoes, Dylan Haegens, Marit Brugman, Thomas Dekker, Wouter de Jong, Lena Olivier, Tamara Swart, Mohamedou Ould Slahi, Robert Bridgeman, and Jörgen Raymann. They all deal with setbacks and challenges in their own way. Hopefully, their experiences will become a source of inspiration for others. The face takes center stage on every canvas. This forms the source for the rest of the work. Irene establishes a connection with the energy of the individuals. A flow that takes her on a journey of image, color, and symbols. The result is a mixed media artwork with many visible and less visible details that amaze and stimulate the viewer to discover more.

ABOUT

There are many people who have ended up in a stressful situation in one way or another. This can range from "not feeling comfortable in your own skin" to burnout, bore-out, divorce, anxiety, loneliness, trauma, grief processing, and relationship problems. More than 40 percent of the Dutch population have experienced mental health issues at some point.

We are particularly concerned about young people. The number of young people under the age of 30 who died by suicide was approximately 15 percent higher in 2021 than in previous years. One in seven young people suffers from depressive thoughts and one in three experiences pressure to perform. 75% of mental health problems develop before the age of 25.
