Success

As Dan's success grew, so did his dependence on alcohol. As social obligations increased, it became increasingly difficult to keep up appearances. The coronavirus pandemic forced Dan to stay at home, forcing him to confront his addiction. He decided to seek help and was admitted to an addiction clinic, which marked the beginning of his recovery.

Balance and Awareness

Dan discovered that mental health revolves around listening to what you need. For years he ignored this, but as his life experienced more and more ups and downs, he realized that balance was essential. “Mental health affects everything: how you work, love, and live. Now I know that it is important to take rest and create space for myself. This gives me the strength to keep going.”

Mental Fitness

For Dan, the day always begins without his phone. “The first 30 minutes are for myself. I exercise, pray, and read something inspiring. These habits are necessary for my mental health,” he explains. He has also learned to listen to his body’s signals. When stressed or overwhelmed, he takes a step back, does breathing exercises, or meditates to calm down.

Small steps

Dan has two important strategies for dealing with stress: exercise and breaking goals down into small steps. “Move a muscle, change a thought. If you are feeling down, go for a walk, exercise, or do something physical. This helps change your perspective.” Additionally, he recommends not making situations bigger than they are by breaking them down into smaller, achievable steps.

The Power of an Active Lifestyle

“When I started drinking, I lost the joy of being active,” says Dan. “But when I became sober, I found that love again. Since then, I have completed an Ironman, I run marathons, and I cycle with my children. Being active every day gives me energy and satisfaction.”

Inspiratie uit Boeken

One of Dan's biggest sources of inspiration is the writer Ryan Holiday. His book *Ego Is The Enemy* helped him let go of his ego. “But *The Obstacle Is The Way* really changed my life. It taught me to embrace challenges and use them as strength.”

A Message of Hope

Dan's message for everyone struggling with mental challenges is simple yet powerful: “You are not alone. Talk about it. Share your feelings with someone you trust. It is not a weakness; it is actually a sign of strength. And remember: you can handle this. One step at a time, one day at a time.”
