A New Beginning After Twenty Years on the Streets
After twenty years of homelessness, Patrick van der Jagt found his way back into society. For years, he lived on the streets of Rotterdam, spending his days scraping together money and searching for a place to sleep. His life was dominated by addictions to cocaine and heroin and work in prostitution. Then, everything changed during Het Rotterdam Project in 2018. In an emotional episode,
"No matter how deep the hole you've dug for yourself, how hopeless life may seem, or how few teeth you have left in your mouth, everyone can learn to love themselves again."
Patrick gave up his addictions on national television, and since then, his life has taken a completely new direction. He found love, became a father, and developed into a successful photographer and motivational speaker. Patrick’s story is one of self-love, resilience, and the harsh reality of life on the streets.

Control and Balance
Patrick knows better than anyone how important it is to take control of your mental health. For him, it’s about honesty, connection, and making choices that benefit both body and mind. “Mental health, to me, means not letting external factors dictate my life. I want to be independent, steer my own course, and make decisions that feel right for me.”
Daily Habits for Mental Well-Being
For Patrick, a healthy lifestyle is the foundation of mental health. “Good sleep, good food, and plenty of exercise,” he says, listing the pillars of his routine. “I also spend time with friends and acquaintances without alcohol or mind-altering substances. Sober moments of connection are essential for keeping my mind clear.” It’s the small but powerful habits that help him maintain balance.
Honesty and Connection
For Patrick, honesty is crucial in reducing stress. “The most important thing is complete honesty and talking to people without shame,” he says. “I have a close-knit group of people around me who understand me and with whom I can truly be myself.” This sense of understanding and connection makes all the difference. “It’s a relief when you have nothing to hide.”
Creativity as an Outlet
Music and art are more than just passions for Patrick—they are an outlet for his emotions. “I used to love singing and listening to music; it always helped me process my feelings,” he shares. Art has also always inspired him. “It helps me find peace. Creativity is my way of expressing emotions.” A song lyric that deeply resonates with Patrick comes from Lady Wray: ‘I’ll let you take a piece of me, I hope you find the peace you need.’ These words, for him, reflect the power of letting go and finding inner peace—something that has personally helped him better understand his own emotions.
A Message of Hope
Patrick’s message for those struggling is simple yet powerful: “It’s never too late to reinvent yourself. Shame and fear are so overrated. You don’t have to hide from anything. Allow yourself to grow and change.” Despite the hardships he has endured, he firmly believes that everyone has the chance to turn their life in a new direction.
